Lack of Vision from Gibbons – Just Slash and Burn

As expected, the Governor’s proposed in his state of the state speech to balance the budget on the backs of state employees (and teachers) with a 6 percent pay-cut including no step increases. He is also forcing the University System to raise tuition to cover a cut of 36 percent to its General Fund portion. As expected he wants to raise premiums on active employees and eliminate the subsidy to retirees. Unfortunately he will layoff 375 fellow employees, eliminate 1,052 vacant positions and who knows what else.

He stated it would not be right to put an undue burden on businesses and citizens who can ill afford to pay for more Nevada government.  He forgets the thousands of government employees who are also citizens and they also can ill afford the pay-cuts and benefit reductions.  Again, he sees state employees as second class citizens, just there to be scapegoated and made poorer for his political motto of, “No New Taxes”. It is time for a change in our tax structure because this one is not working no matter how Gibbons spins it.

Call, write or e-mail your legislators and the Governor. Make your point clear and be logical. I plan to!

Here is the link to the information about our legislators.

Gibbons’ speech is here.

Barbara Buckley’s rebuttal is here.

Letter to state employees just before quitting time at 5:00 pm. 1-15-09 (Th)

And for those brave enough, schedule a meeting on-line (it is probably best not to tell him you are an employee)
